Teaching

Classes with Becky Walsh: It’s education, but not as you’d know it!

Personally, I get really bored sitting in a room listening to an expert talking. No matter how much I love the subject, I need more than then dry information.

My education is entertaining! If your not having a good time, your not learning! What’s more it has to mean something personal to you, the student.

What is integral learning?

Current models for education value what works for society. In one sense every person within a society works for that society, for the smooth running of its services and for its exports to be a successful society in a global market. Therefore the talents that bring wealth to that society are the talents valued in school.

90% of the way we are educated is in one way. Its cognitive based, we read the books, listen to the expert and it’s we have some analyses. But it is very much one way of learning. If you do well in science and maths you get compensated more in attention and money based job opportunity. It’s a case of how we have set up our culture.

The truth is there are multiple types of intelligence and because of this we learn in multiple ways of knowing.

  • Visually – We learn from what we see and believe with our own eyes.
  • Kinaesthetic – Through movement.
  • Somatically – By what and how we touch.
  • Experimentally – By our own experience.
  • Intuitive – By what we know without reasoning.

The learning with all of the above being included is what’s known as integral learning. This isn’t my personal method of teaching. I learnt it at California institute of integral studies. It works for me, as I am dyslexic. I failed maths at school (ungraded, seriously!), but had to do it as part of my degree. PANIC! I now love maths as I leant it at an integral level, I now see the point of it. Maths, means something to me.

Bring the whole self into learning, not just the mind. If you leave one of these elements of who you are at the door you are missing a part of yourself.

I might like to joke around, but I also make sure that leanring takes place in a safely held environment that not only is full of joy and humour, but empathy, connection and community to fellow students. Even for the on-line courses there is always a point of contact during the study time. There is nothing better than a moment of realisation, a ‘light blub on‘ moment that deepens our love of life.

I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation, you are a very inspirational lady and helped me to open my heart and mind to a different way of seeing how I can live my life in a more positive and loving way. thank you. Lynn
